Read replicas can relieve reporting, search queries, or catalog-heavy accesses. However, they do not solve bad queries or an overloaded primary database. Moreover, the team must be able to deal with replication delays. For price or inventory logic, this is not always acceptable.
The pragmatic approach is usually: first query analysis, then index optimization, then caching, followed by targeted alleviation through replication or specialized data stores. Not the other way around.

A shop scales not only through load distribution but also through its ability to change. If releases are risky, manual, or infrequent, operational risk grows with each new feature. Eventually, it is not the infrastructure that becomes the bottleneck, but the approval process.
CI/CD is therefore not a matter of convenience. Automated builds, tests, security checks, and reproducible deployments reduce errors and accelerate changes. This counts double in e-commerce because business areas often need to react quickly - to campaigns, product ranges, pricing logic, or external marketplace requirements.
Blue-green or rolling deployments help roll out changes in a controlled manner. Feature flags additionally reduce the risk because functions are technically provided but only activated for specific purposes later. In medium-sized businesses, security often only becomes a major issue when an audit is pending or a major customer sets requirements. In e-commerce, that is too late. Security vulnerabilities under load are not just a compliance risk but an operational risk.
DevSecOps in this context primarily means: embed security into the delivery process rather than tacking it on at the end. Dependency scans, secret management, hardened containers, role separation, traceable access, and regular patches are not additional work for later. They are part of a scalable platform.
At the same time, it applies: Not every measure brings the same benefit. A small team should first close the biggest risks - such as unsafe deployments, missing access control concepts, or unpatched runtime environments - before investing in theoretically perfect security architectures.
The right maturity level beats the perfect target architecture
Not every shop needs Kubernetes, microservices, and complex event choreographies right away. For some companies, a well-modernized modular application with automated deployments, good caching, a stable database, and resilient monitoring is the clearly better path.
The technical maturity must fit the team size, budget, and operational reality. Too much complexity eats away the benefits of scaling. Too little structure hinders growth. That’s why a sober decision is worthwhile: What problems really exist today, which will exist in twelve months, and which architecture reliably addresses these exact load cases?
