The Project

On behalf of the Jewish Community Elmshorn e.V., we developed a multimedia city tour app that guides users along historical routes through Elmshorn. The app conveys the Jewish history and culture of the city — with professional audio narration, historical photographs, PDF documents, and an integrated glossary of Jewish terms and traditions. The project was also featured in the press (shz.de).

Challenge

The Jewish history of Elmshorn is rich and multifaceted — from thriving businesses and community life through persecution during the Nazi era to today's culture of remembrance with Stolpersteine and memorials. This history needed to be made tangible and accessible for citizens, tourists, and school classes — on location, interactively, and with multimedia.

Core Features

  • Three Curated Routes: Two outdoor routes with GPS navigation through the Elmshorn city center and one indoor route through the synagogue — a total of 10 stations of historical significance.
  • GPS Navigation: Real-time location tracking with Google Maps, compass orientation, polyline route display, and automatic progress detection.
  • Audio Narration: Professionally recorded texts at each station — over 20 audio files with narratives, poetry readings, and specially composed music.
  • Interactive Glossary: Searchable database with over 30 terms on Jewish culture, religion, and history — from Kiddush and Mezuzah to Synagogue.
  • Multimedia Content: Historical photographs, illustrations, PDF documents for in-depth exploration, and HTML-formatted descriptions at each station.
  • Indoor Navigation: Specialized wayfinding within the synagogue with floor plan display and room-by-room guidance.

Technical Highlights

  • Cross-platform with Flutter — one codebase for iOS and Android with native look and feel
  • Real-time GPS tracking with compass integration and automatic station detection
  • Offline-capable architecture — all content, audio files, and map data available locally
  • Multimedia engine for audio streaming, PDF rendering, and HTML content display
  • Onboarding system with multi-page introduction for new users

Result

The app makes the Jewish history of Elmshorn digitally accessible for the first time — directly at the historical locations. It is used by school classes, tourists, and residents, making an important contribution to the culture of remembrance. The project was featured in regional press and has been embraced by the community as a valuable tool for historical education.
